Women and Social Media

Social Media has taken over our lives more than anyone could have ever imagined. Now with the use of editing and photoshop softwares, it can be hard to decipher the real from the fake. Women’s bodies have been picked apart in the media for years. They are subjected to being edited and having their bodies changed for unwarranted public validation.

Women’s bodies have been subjected to scrutiny in traditional media for years. In 2024, women are facing a new wave of objectification. Artificial Intelligence is further intensifying the objectification of women on and off social media. AI-powered image generation tools can produce hyper-realistic and idealized depictions of women that can perpetuate inappropriate false actions and unrealistic beauty standards.

Big name brands can capitalize on exploiting women through their advertising campaigns. The manipulation of women’s bodies for public validation has become a pervasive marketing strategy for many companies. This reinforces harmful stereotypes for women and contributes to unrealistic beauty ideals. These pervasive advertising campaigns not only affect the mental and emotional but the well-being of women but also perpetuates damaging societal norms.

Younger generations are faced with the unfortunate future of digitally altered images and pervasive advertising. The younger generation is susceptible to distorted images, shaping their understanding of beauty, intimate love, and self-esteem. The emphasis on edited perfection creates a toxic environment for teenagers and children where self-worth is often measured by external validation.

There is a concerning trend where women’s bodies are commodified and manipulated for some kind of public validation. It is imperative to engage with and challenge these unrealistic beauty standards to promote a healthier culture on social media and throughout advertising campaigns. We must set an example for the women in future generations and promote genuine self-expression. By doing this, we can create a more inclusive and empowering online environment for women.
